The first annual Hile Mile was a success! Twenty six people donated (what a lucky number!) and we made $1012.20. Fourteen runners and walkers attended, while the others decided to sleep in or run elsewhere to avoid coming to UCSD (i.e. workplace!)
Everyone who donated received a beautiful sapphire blue shirt compliments of Anu Kumar at EmbroidMe in Sorrento Valley. I didn’t want to fill the shirt with logos. I had a small part of my motto printed on the back of the neck, “Never Give Up!” I wanted something understated, like me. I also wanted the wearer to remember me as they put on the shirt over the head, like a small pat on the back. Kim Graves also commented it is encouraging for the people running behind you, too!
The Hile Mile was not a UCSD sanctioned event so I was worried about campus police seeing a large group of runners. My plan was to have wave starts. Brian thought it was the most hilarious idea that I would consider wave starts. He laughed and laughed, and laughed some more. Whatever!
Brian and Mieng Nguyen led the run with a finishing time of 7:45. Mieng is a track sprinter, so when I mentioned the 30 foot elevation gain, she was worried. But she crushed it! I followed just after 8:00 minutes, pausing to take these wonderful pictures along the way. My walkers stayed in a nice group and hammed it up for the camera.
Bill, Kalia and Tegan Guheen arrived to the party at 9:15. Just in time for the second wave start. HAHA! We did need wave starts afterall! I ran along with the Guheens since I had not seen them in 3+ years! Besides, little Tegan is too sweet to resist!
Mindy Schroeder and Tommy Lam kept running afterward for a total of 6 miles!
After the mile, everyone enjoyed Star Baker Laura Louie’s delicious lemon thyme cake and blueberry crumble, and my NuttZo cookies. Fresh fruit and PerfectBar samples were also served.
We had awesome raffle prizes: Chipotle gift certificates, NuttZo paraphernalia, and the grande prize was a three month supply of Perfect Bar. Congratulations to Julie Uhren for the big win!
Thank you to all my friends for your support! This 7 marathon adventure would not be possible without your support. Brian and I are so grateful!
